I’ve been sending out some impertinent tweets about Progressive Insurance lately, but I haven’t explained how they pissed me off. So I will do that here as succinctly as possible. There’s a general understanding that says, “insurance companies— oh they’re awful,” but since Progressive turned their shit hose on my late sister and my parents, I’ve learned some things that really surprised me.

I’ll try to cleave to the facts. On June 19, 2010, my sister was driving in Baltimore when her car was struck by another car and she was killed. The other driver had run a red light and hit my sister as she crossed the intersection on the green light.

You think running a marathon is hard?

Well it is. That’s why I don’t run them. But the essence of running a marathon relates to the way I’ve felt about life lately. It’s like I’m at the point where I say to myself, “I’m going to stop. I can’t do this anymore.” So I start bashing the trainer, or the self-help exercise book that told me running 26.2 miles was a good idea to begin with. Or I start to tell myself that my body’s not capable of handling such a distance, and questioning whether or not I’ve had enough water that day to even try.

I’m sure we can all relate to these kind of dialogues. A lot of things are hard, we should just face it. The good news is, I think there’s a point to it all. Regardless of work, friendships, or family, some personalities are harder to deal with – they’re going to make you want to stop. And yea, you’re going to want to believe the stories in your head telling you that you’re unprepared and you’re not good enough - or that someone you know could do “it” better. But the truth is life will go on, and that which does not kill you makes you stronger – yes, I said it.

Why not dare to live on the other side of unimaginable pain? Pain that makes you doubt every second you can take one more minute of what you’re going through. I think that’s what we were all made for, to break through that barrier. I myself have seen transformation happen on the other side of that breaking point because I see my learning curve sharpening.

And so I’ve instituted a new rule and it goes a little something like this… We all have a point where we typically give up. Well from now on when I reach this point, I’m going to reach deep for some leftover stores of courage and push through it. If I really want to take this rule to it’s limit, I’m going to break through the second barrier too. Refuse to quit and resolve to reach your tipping point. I predict the hills will become a lot more manageable from there.

And I have a feeling the knowledge & insights will come in handy someday.
